My professional and personal experience is that deepening our embodied presence brings peace, slowness, stillness and equanimity. A sense of embodying our power, of being able to be with all things as they arise and pass away, of finding creative responses to life as it unfolds in and around us. This is why supporting and developing the capacity for embodied presence is a crucial part of how I work. It is important to me that I offer a relationship that is non-judgmental, respectful and safe with clear professional boundaries. I see both support and challenge as essential parts of a therapy relationship. Therapy is a commitment, which requires courage and honesty from both client and therapist. Often people seek therapy when they have got stuck in repetitive patterns of feelings, thoughts, body sensations and actions. Therapy is a process that enables clients to increase their awareness of these patterns and thus make their own choices about changes they want to make in their lives. As well as increasing awareness of the client’s patterns, as a Gestalt therapist, I help create opportunities for clients to try out new ways of being in the world. I sometimes work with clients outdoors. I find that the aliveness of the natural world can be an incredible co-therapist. Examples of working outdoors are walking or sitting outside while talking, sitting quietly and feeling the earth or connecting intimately and deeply with aspects of the natural world such as trees, plants, animals and rivers. I have been working as a therapist for over 30 years, and as a supervisor for over 25 years.

Hello, I'm Kate Upshall, a UKCP Accredited Gestalt Psychotherapist and Relational Supervisor based in Todmorden, West Yorkshire. I offer sessions in person and online. I am passionate about the benefits of Gestalt therapy, and its potential to support us all to live an authentic, satisfying life. I opened my private practice in January 2018. My background is in mental health and wellbeing roles within the voluntary sector, including a national homelessness charity, and a charity for adults with acquired brain injury. I'm also a qualified and experienced Art and Design teacher. If you would like to use art materials in your sessions I would enjoy incorporating them. I aim to offer a neurodivergent affirming therapeutic space. This includes providing a range of stim/fidget objects and other sensory items. I welcome you bringing anything to sessions that will help you feel more comfortable.

Masters in Gestalt Psychotherapy, The London Gestalt Centre/London Metropolitan University. Professional Psychotherapist Diploma, The London Gestalt Centre. Certificate in Couples and Relationship Therapy, The London Gestalt Centre and The Gestalt Integrative Institute, Oslo. EMDR accreditation, EMDR Association UK.
I’m a UKCP-accredited Gestalt psychotherapist and EMDR-accredited therapist, working with individuals, couples and groups in East London and online. I’m also in the advanced stages of training as a clinical supervisor. My approach is warm, relational, creative and engaged. I work with trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, shame, burnout, relationship difficulties and experiences of abuse or coercive relationships. I’m particularly interested in how our early experiences continue to live in the body and shape how we relate to ourselves and others. My work draws on Gestalt psychotherapy, attachment theory, trauma and neuroscience, alongside EMDR and somatic approaches. Creativity is also an important part of my practice. Therapy doesn’t always have to happen through talking alone, and where helpful we might use imagery, metaphor, movement, objects or other creative experiments to explore what words cannot always reach. My style is compassionate but not passive. Alongside offering support and a space to feel understood, I will gently challenge, stay curious about what happens between us, and help us notice patterns that may be difficult to see from the inside. I work affirmatively with LGBTQIA+ and neurodivergent clients and with diverse relationship structures, including non-monogamy and polyamory. My practice is explicitly anti-oppressive and Black-empathic, with an awareness of how racism, racial trauma, culture, identity, difference and power can shape our experience and enter the therapeutic relationship. My aim is to help you understand yourself more fully, develop greater choice in how you respond, and find ways of living and relating that feel more genuinely your own.
